This project focuses on the development of an AI-powered corrosion detection system using a Raspberry Pi and a camera module. The goal is to provide a cost-effective and portable solution for real-time monitoring and early detection of corrosion on metal surfaces, which is critical in industries such as infrastructure, automotive, and maritime operations.

The Challenge

  • Limited processing power of Raspberry Pi for AI inference.
  • Accurate corrosion detection in varying lighting and surface conditions.
  • Real-time image processing with minimal latency.
  • Ensuring reliable detection in remote or offline environments.

 

The Solution

Our team worked well and resolved all the problems.

  • Optimized the trained model using lightweight architectures (e.g., MobileNet) and model quantization to ensure efficient on-device performance.
  • Collected a diverse dataset and applied data augmentation techniques during training to improve model robustness.
  • Streamlined the image capture and processing pipeline and used efficient code in Python to reduce delay.
  • Designed the system to operate fully offline using local inference, with optional integration for IoT-based alerts when connectivity is available.
